Migration: Having access to files
Here is a guide on how you can access your files while the migration is occurring.
- Keep OneNote Open and the Notebooks you need Open. Even if OneNote no longer has access to OneDrive or the Microsoft License you can have the notebooks open as Read-Only. This means you cannot edit them but you can read them
- As a precaution, copy any files that you need from OneDrive to the downloads folder. Also include any files on your Desktop or the Documents folder.
- Make sure the documents that are saved to your Desktop are not being backed up by OneDrive.
Your Desktop folder is stored locally on your device for the most part. If you have turned on OneDrive backup for the Desktop you will need to make sure the files you want are saved locally on your device. If you see cloud icons on your desktop items, you will need to make sure they are saved locally to your laptop. You can do this by opening them or making them "Always keep on this device"
To do this:
Open finder and navigate to "PLCScotch - OneDrive" in the "Locations".

If you cannot find this location, in finder, select "Go" from the top menu bar and select Home. there will be a folder titled "PLCScotch - OneDrive"

In the top level of this folder there will be a file titled "Desktop" and "Documents". Two-finger click or Control + Click on each of these folders and select "Always keep on this device".

If you do not have any folders called "Desktop" or "Documents" OneDrive has not backed up these folders. For the purposes of the migration this is perfectly fine. If you are worried please visit the Tech Centre during one of your breaks.
-
As Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel will not be available during the migration weekend you can open the Microsoft files in the Apple Equivalent Application. (Please note that OneNote will only be available as Read-Only and there is not Apple Equivalent).
Microsoft's App
Apple's Equivalent App
Word
Pages
Excel
Numbers
Powerpoint
Keynote
To open a document in Apple's Apps, Two-finger click or Control + Click on the document and select "Open With" and click on the App you wish to use. For example, if I wanted to open a Word Doc, I would Two-finger click, "Open With" and click on Pages.
This will allow you to save and edit documents which then can be re-opened with the Microsoft Apps after the migration is completed.
